Cook with Hella Vegan Eats!

I am enamored with Hella Vegan Eats! Tiffany and Sylvee, the two ladies behind HVE, are always impressing me with their culinary prowess and their charm.

Fat Bottom Bakery has gotten the chance to team up with Hella Vegan Eats for events around Oakland and we always have an amazing time. Getting to hang out with these rad folks AND eat their amazing food is pretty incredible! Their passion for good food is evident in the dishes themselves, whether its tamales, coconut ice cream, or one of their many other offerings. HVE always serves up tasty vegan food that showcases the quality ingredients and delicious veggies.

HVE is hosting a Nigerian and Latin cooking class on March 21. 2012 in collaboration with La Cocina and Chiefo Chukwudebe of Chiefo’s Kitchen. Here’s what Tiff and Sylvee have to say about what their upcoming class is all about:

Because vegetables are delicious. For serious. In this class we’ll make vegan food because it tastes good, not just because it’s vegan. Think plantain and cabbage dishes from Nigeria and Latin American inspired dishes like Bell Pepper Ice Cream and platanos from Oakland’s Hella Vegan Eats.

I am sure this class will be amazing and you better believe they have a thing or two to teach about cooking!

FBB & Hella Vegan Eats at this week’s Art Murmur!

We are so, so excited to return to Oakland Art Murmur this month because this time we’re doing things a little different, and it’s surely going to be the best ever!

This month we’ll have a booth on 23rd street (just off Telegraph, in the main vendor area) as well as walking around with our cupcake trays as usual. Having a booth means we can serve you more than just cupcakes this time round– we’ll also have Fall apple galettes! Oh, and did I mention we’re sharing the booth with our friends from Hella Vegan Eats??

You may remember them from Art Murmurs past, or some of the Underground Markets, or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to attend one of the fabulous events they’ve catered. If you’ve had the pleasure of tasting their food you’ll know I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s good. Like, SO GOOD. Maybe even the best in town. Yeah, I went there.

So! Please come visit us this Friday and get a whole plateful of the tastiest vegan food Oakland has to offer. We’ll be bringing pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, apple galettes, and teaming up with HVE on spiced pumpkin horchata! The Hella Vegan ladies will also have their delicious seasonal vegetable tamales and a full array of homemade salsas for you. How could you resist?

Best week ever!

Oh my, last week was super busy and amazing! Ashley and I really pulled ourselves together and created new recipes, tabled at 21 Grand, and sold our spectacular rainbow cupcakes at Dyke March…pretty impressive, right?

First thing first, we owe a BIG thank you to all the lovely people at 21 Grand and Club Sandwich for their support and for inviting us to the show!

If you were at the show, then I don’t need to tell you how great the music, the people, and Fat Bottom baked goods were. Ashley and I were stoked to be at the show because it gave us a chance to make the first public debut of some new recipes AND we got to enjoy the music of Stripmall Seizures, KIT, Father Murphy, and Baaddd. All the bands were really outstanding and a real pleasure to be around.

So as I said we also went to Dyke March. Ashley and I worked all day in kitchen making the most cupcakes ever attempted by Fat Bottom Bakery; we made what felt like a million of our tiny psychedelic rainbow cupcakes. Our prep time went off without a hitch and was really fun thanks to the help of our lovely friends Tucker, Kathleen, and Jose (You three are the best!).

After the baking Ashley and I got all prettied up in dresses, did our hair, and even wore makeup! We headed out to Dolores Park.  It was incredibly hot and simply packed with lovely queers and allies. Ashley and I braved the heat and had a great time slinging cupcakes, talking to old friends, and meeting new people.

Oh, we also made special buttons for the big day!

The day was a pleasure all around and just as it began to cool down and everyone got ready for the march we sold our last cupcake. Ashley and I were free to join in the festivities of the march without the burden of our cupcake tray!

Our week speed by super fast and now we are enjoying a more relaxed week. But not to worry we are busily making new recipes and will be keeping an eye out for new events.

I love lemons!

I love summer food. Ashley and I have been perfecting recipes for all kinds of summer treats, like our strawberry cupcakes and brand new chocolate-mint cupcakes

So even though it was a gloomy, grey, entirely un-summery day, in my heart I knew I wanted to make something that would be totally refreshing on a hot sunny day- I needed to make batch of lemon poppy seed cookies and a pitcher of ginger lemonade!

So I bundled up, walked to the market, and bought the most lemons ever.


Seriously, lemons are the greatest!


The cookies are crisp, chewy, tart.


So basically they are the best. 

Keep checking back Ashley and I have been making have a bunch of new recipes and are always looking out for places to table. 

New cupcakes!

It was a lovely summery weekend. The skies were clear, the sun was shining, birds were chirping…etcetera. What did Ashley and I decide to do? Go on a hike or take a swim? Nope. We spent all weekend working over a hot oven perfecting cupcake recipes in our million-degree kitchen. It was great and totally worth it. This was one of those baking experiments that turns our perfect on the first try, which as you may know is not always the case.

                              Introducing coconut cupcakes two ways!

We invented a seriously intense coconut cupcake, a moist coco-nutty cupcake with coconut cream frosting and chocolate ganache topping. This is a real dessert cupcake, it’s super rich and totally satisfying.

And we also created a strawberry coconut cupcake. This is an airy coconut cupcake with a fresh strawberry butter cream. It’s light, delicious, and perfect snack on a summer evening.
